Turn a port speed into terabytes a month, or a monthly traffic volume into the speed you need. Then see what that traffic serves.

Every DediGermany server has a 1 Gbit/s port with unmetered traffic: about 329 TB a month if it ran flat out. Real sites peak in the evening, so size the port for your busiest hour, not the average.

The formula

Traffic per month = speed in bits per second ÷ 8 × seconds in a month. An average month has 30.44 days, or 2,629,800 seconds, so 1 Mbit/s used around the clock moves about 0.33 TB a month, and a full 1 Gbit/s about 329 TB.

The other way round, 20 TB a month spread evenly is an average of about 61 Mbit/s. Real traffic is not even: most sites see their busiest hour at two to three times the daily average, so plan the port for the peak.

Unmetered traffic on every server

DediGermany servers come with a 1 Gbit/s port and unmetered traffic, so there is no monthly allowance to watch and no bill for overage. A 10 Gbit/s uplink is available on selected servers on request.

Questions

How many TB a month is 1 Gbit/s?

About 329 TB in an average month (30.44 days), or 324 TB in a 30-day month, if the port runs at full speed the whole time.

Is traffic really unmetered?

Yes. Our servers have a 1 Gbit/s port with unmetered traffic and no overage charges, subject to the acceptable use policy.

How many video viewers can 1 Gbit/s serve?

At 5 Mbit/s per 1080p stream, about 200 at once, in practice a little less to leave room for overhead. For more viewers, use several servers or a CDN.

Why are there two kinds of TB?

Network traffic and disk makers count in decimal terabytes (1012 bytes). Some tools show tebibytes (240 bytes), which are about 10% larger.
